At A Glance: Energy Technician (Gas Plant Operators)
Energy technicians distribute or process gas by controlling compressors to maintain pressures on pipelines. To do their job, technicians work with specialized equipment to monitor and control materials and processes. They record the results of inspections and tests conducted on equipment and materials. They work with other plant operators to ensure quality and safety of the processing plant.
To become an energy technician requires at least a high school diploma and one to two years of on-the-job training. Some employers may require additional certifications or apprenticeship. Energy technicians earn approximately $34.17 an hour.

Commonly Performed Tasks
There are many tasks that energy technicians must perform regularly. Technicians play a major role in distributing and processing gas for utility companies. They are responsible for controlling processes, monitoring equipment, and conducting quality assurance tests and recording results and data.
- Monitor transportation and storage of flammable and other potentially dangerous products
- Monitor equipment functioning and perform regular unit checks to ensure equipment is operating well
- Control operation of equipment to liquefy, compress, or degasify natural gas
- Start and shut down plant equipment
- Record, review, and compile operations records, test results, and gauge readings
